About
Samson traces its origins to the J.P. Tolman Company, founded in Massachusetts in 1878 by J.P. Tolman, who patented a switch braiding machine. Samson Cordage Works was incorporated in 1888, headquarters moved to Ferndale, Washington in 1988, and the business was renamed Samson Rope Technologies in 2001.
Company milestones include the first synthetic double-braided rope (1957), the first HMPE ropes (1980), RP-12 round plait (1981), AmSteel-Blue (1996), DPX fiber technology (2003), EverSteel-X for FSRUs (2017), SamsonDry (2022) and Defender Fuse (2023). In 2023 Samson acquired Folch Ropes in Barcelona, Spain, and in 2024 Corderie Henri Lancelin in Ernée, France, which operates a test facility able to break ropes up to 600 metric tons. Ropes are manufactured in ISO 9001:2015 certified facilities.
