About
SSI was founded in 1990 by Rolf Oetter as Albacore Research Ltd., an outgrowth of his research at the University of Victoria in the late 1980s. The aim was to commercialize CAD/CAM software for shipbuilding by building on commercially available, off-the-shelf technology, and the company adopted the Autodesk and Microsoft SQL Server platforms for development.
An open-architecture approach, designed to integrate with other business applications, allowed SSI to grow into a multi-national enterprise. Rolf Oetter stepped down as CEO in 2010. The company is led by Denis Morais (CEO), Darren Larkins (President & CIO), who co-invented its Database Driven Relational Object Modeling technology, and Deborah Peet (COO). SSI's platform partners are Aras and Autodesk.
