Metal Stitching / Cast Iron Repair

Cold, on-site metal stitching of cracked cast iron engine blocks, bedplates, turbine and machinery castings, restoring original strength without welding.

Description

Metal stitching is often the only practical way to repair cracks in cast iron and salvage otherwise condemned components, since welding is ineffective on cast iron and can cause further damage. The repair is permanent, introduces no heat, can be performed on site and restores the area to original strength with a watertight and gas-tight result.

Key features

  • Crack testing and cropping out of damaged areas
  • Fitting of a matched cast iron insert, drilling and tapping along the seam
  • Installation of stitching pins and locks, then machining the seam flush
  • Verification by dye penetrant or other NDT
  • Follow-up on-site machining to return surfaces to original dimensions; can be combined with line boring and laser alignment

Applications

Cracked engine blocks (sidewalls, liner bores) and bedplates repaired in place aboard ship, steam turbines, pump casings, gearboxes and heavy industrial and mining machinery.
