Thordon Bearings Spare Part

Thordon RiverTough and SXL Propeller Shaft Bearings

Thordon water-lubricated propeller shaft bearings for coastal and inland workboats. RiverTough with NiCrB-coated sleeves outlasts rubber bearings by 2x or more in abrasive water and installs at a 3:1 L/D ratio. SXL gives low friction.

Description

Thordon's water-lubricated propeller shaft bearings for coastal and inland workboats come in two grades: RiverTough for abrasive water, and SXL for low friction.

RiverTough

  • Runs with hard-coated nickel-chrome-boron (NiCrB) Thordon shaft sleeves
  • Thordon reports it routinely outlasts rubber bearings by a factor of two or more in the most abrasive water conditions
  • More resilient than rubber bearings, which makes alignment easier and reduces edge loading
  • Installed at a 3:1 L/D ratio, compared with 4:1 for rubber bearings
  • Installed with an interference freeze fit, which is often recommended for newbuilds with a consistent, concentric housing bore, or bonded with Thordon-approved adhesive, often best for repairs where the housing bore is not ideal

SXL

  • Lower coefficient of friction than Thordon XL, which reduces break-away torque and gives smoother running at low shaft speeds
  • Better resistance to third-particle abrasive wear and longer wear life than XL

Applications

Tailshaft bearings for workboats, tugs and fishing vessels on coastal and inland waterways, for newbuilds and retrofits.
