Gate Rudder™: an integrated propulsion and steering concept

Wrtsil

Integrated propulsion and steering concept with two high-lift rudder foils either side of the propeller that contribute thrust in transit and direct thrust in manoeuvring; mainly for single-screw newbuilds.

Description

Gate Rudder™ is an integrated propulsion and steering concept in which two high-lift rudder foils are positioned on either side of a specially designed propeller. Instead of sitting in the propeller slipstream and adding resistance, the foils operate in a controlled flow and contribute to propulsion.

How it works

  • In transit, the foils rotate to adjust hydrodynamic loading and contribute to thrust
  • In manoeuvring, they act as a thrust-directing system for rapid course changes
  • Propeller and twin foils are designed together as one system

Key benefits

  • Lower propulsion power demand; fuel savings of up to 20% reported in some applications
  • Improved harbour manoeuvrability and course keeping at sea
  • Improved noise and vibration characteristics
  • Greater flexibility in aft-ship layout and machinery positioning
  • Stable performance across varying conditions

Applications

Primarily single-screw merchant vessels. Best evaluated at the early newbuild design stage, when hull form, propulsion layout and steering can be optimised together; retrofit to existing vessels is technically possible. Realised savings depend on vessel type, operating profile and reference configuration.
