Wärtsilä Equipment
Wärtsilä Energy Saving Technologies
Wärtsilä energy saving technologies for newbuilds and retrofits, including EnergoFlow, EnergoProFin, HP nozzle, Gate Rudder, Elogrid, rotor sails, EnergoPac, propeller redesign, EcoControl and OPTI Design.
Description
Wärtsilä energy saving technologies (ESTs) reduce the power a vessel needs for propulsion by improving propeller, hull and rudder efficiency, recovering energy from the propeller wake or hub vortex, adding wind-assisted thrust or optimising pitch-RPM settings. Depending on the solution, they apply to newbuilds and retrofits.
Technologies
- EnergoFlow: pre-swirl stator; ~2–7% fuel savings; newbuild and retrofit for tankers, bulkers and other merchant vessels; payback 1–2 years; up to 10% combined with a new propeller and EnergoProFin
- EnergoProFin: propeller cap with fins; ~2% typical, up to 5%; any FPP or Wärtsilä CPP; underwater installation possible; reduces noise and vibration
- High performance (HP) nozzle: improves bollard pull for tugs and workboats; retrofit
- Gate Rudder™: twin foils either side of the propeller; up to 20% reported; newbuilds and selected retrofits on single-screw vessels
- Elogrid: CFD-optimised tunnel thruster grid; ~1–2% per tunnel (≈1–4% per vessel); for cruise ships, RoPax, ferries, offshore vessels and container ships; under licence from Elomatic
- Rotor sails: wind-assisted propulsion, up to 30% depending on conditions; Wärtsilä is an authorised seller/service partner of Anemoi Rotor Sails
- EnergoPac: integrated propeller and rudder; ~2–9% power saving at trial speed; primarily newbuilds
- New propeller design: for vessels slow steaming below design speed; payback typically 2–3 years; up to 15% combined with reduced speed and engine power
- EcoControl / EcoControl for retrofit: automatic optimal RPM-pitch setpoint for CPP installations
- OPTI Design: CFD-based optimisation of the whole propulsion system for engine and hull
When to consider
- Newbuild design: integrated efficiency solutions, propulsion optimisation, EnergoPac
- Dry dock planning: propulsion upgrades, hydrodynamic improvements, rotor sails
- Vessel performance review: propeller redesign, EcoControl, optimisation studies
- CII or fuel-cost programmes: combined operational and physical measures
