Wärtsilä Hybrid-Electric LNG Carrier Propulsion Design

Wrtsil

Hybrid-electric propulsion design for large LNG carriers using five compact generating sets and energy storage instead of two 2-stroke engines and four auxiliary gensets, adding about 9,000 cbm of cargo space.

Description

The Wärtsilä hybrid-electric LNG carrier design replaces the typical arrangement of two large 2-stroke engines and four auxiliary generating sets with five compact generating sets combined with energy storage in a modular hybrid-electric propulsion plant.

Key features

  • About 6% more cargo space: a standard 174,000 cbm vessel gains 9,000 cbm below deck (185,000 cbm design)
  • Equipment weight reduced by over 40%, keeping displacement, draft and hull performance comparable to current designs and compatible with standard large LNG terminals
  • Reduced fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and methane slip at actual operating speeds (around 15 kn versus the 19.5 kn design speed)
  • Battery handles dynamic loads so gensets run at high, steady loads with fewer running hours and lower maintenance costs
  • Built-in redundancy through modular arrangement and the electric distribution system

Fuel flexibility

Based on the Wärtsilä 31 engine platform, convertible to LNG, bio-LNG, synthetic LNG, HFO, MDO and various biofuels and blends, and targeted for future carbon-neutral and zero-carbon fuels.

Future readiness

The electric plant is designed to integrate fuel cells, solar panels, heat-to-power and energy saving technologies such as wind-assisted propulsion and air lubrication.
