Bernard P. McDonough founded the company in 1945 as a barge leasing sideline to the construction company he operated in the southern United States. The business grew into a full-service marine transportation company whose staff are known as "The Barge People".
McDonough describes itself as a complete solution provider for barge and tug charter and for the coordination and management of cargo moves. It participates in the American Waterways Operators Responsible Carrier Program and received the ConstructSecure Platinum Safety Award in 2021.
