About
Amherst Madison traces its origins to 1893, when brothers Charles T. Jones and George W. Jones formed the Star Coal and Coke Company of Fayette County, West Virginia. Amherst Barge Company was formed in 1949, and in 1955 the steamer J.S. Lewis became the first towboat in the Amherst fleet. In 1970 river operations were transferred to Madison Coal & Supply Company, which was renamed Amherst Madison, Inc. in 2010 and organized into Towing, Construction and Marine Repair divisions.
In 2016 the company acquired the land and assets of the former O-Kan Marine Repair in Gallipolis, Ohio. Since 2019 it has been 100% employee owned through the Port Amherst, Ltd. ESOP.
