Description
Wärtsilä Underwater Services Scrubber Overboard Repairs fix and prevent corrosion caused by acidic wash water discharged from exhaust gas scrubbers, which can damage mild-steel overboard piping and nearby hull plating and lead to leaks into cargo spaces, engine room, ballast tanks and voids. Many repairs are carried out in-situ by a global network of factory-trained, industry-certified diver technicians, avoiding dry-docking.
Underwater projects can be completed in as little as two days, and repairs can cost up to three times less than dry-docking. The methods also apply to damage from EGR wash water and ballast water treatment substances.
Repair solutions
- Patented pipe-in-pipe: acid-resistant GRE pipe fixed inside the mild steel pipe; developed with Maersk and exclusive to Wärtsilä; best for large systems as a long-term solution
- Prefabricated stainless steel inserts: patented solution suitable for most scrubbers, fitted underwater using a cofferdam
- Replacement pipe and coating: new mild steel spool piece welded into the hull, with old coating removed and corrosion-resistant coating applied
- Laser-cladded mild steel piping: new mild steel pipe protected with a laser-cladded cover
