DP capability plot
Calculation of the environmental conditions in which a vessel can keep position and heading, presented as a polar diagram.
Description
A DP capability plot assesses a vessel's ability to keep position and heading under given environmental conditions. Based on the vessel design, wind, wave and current forces are estimated for every angle of attack and compared with the forces the propulsion can create.
Key features
- Results shown on a polar diagram of limiting wind speed from 0 to 50 knots for a fixed current
- Can be repeated for failure cases such as loss of a bow thruster or a bus
- A full capability report with appendix data can be provided
Applications
Assessing weather limits for DP vessels. The plot assesses weather limits, not position-keeping accuracy.
