Wärtsilä 34DF Dual-Fuel Engine

Wrtsil

Medium-speed 4-stroke dual-fuel marine engine running on LNG, HFO, LFO or biofuel; 6L–16V, 500 kW/cyl as main engine (up to 8000 kW) and up to 520 kW/cyl as genset at 720/750 rpm.

Description

The Wärtsilä 34DF is a medium-speed 4-stroke dual-fuel marine engine for constant-speed generating sets (auxiliary or diesel/gas-electric main engine) and variable-speed mechanical drives. It is based on the Wärtsilä 32 diesel engine introduced in the mid-1990s and can run in 100% gas mode.

Technical data

  • Configurations: 6L to 16V
  • Main engine: 500 kW per cylinder, maximum mechanical output 8000 kW
  • Auxiliary genset (especially in-line): up to 520 kW per cylinder at 720 or 750 rpm
  • Fuels: LNG, LFO, HFO or biofuel, with fuel sharing (gas mode 0–100%)

Key features

  • Seamless fuel switching without loss of power or speed
  • Advanced combustion control and low gas pressure
  • IMO Tier II in diesel mode, Tier III in gas mode; Tier III in diesel mode with Wärtsilä NOx Reducer (NOR)
  • Optional greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction package with emission levels verified at factory acceptance tests

EnviroPac option

For constant-speed 34DF engines, EnviroPac cuts methane emissions in half compared with the standard engine and helps meet IMO Tier III NOx limits. It comprises low-load optimisation software and higher-heat-resistant SCR elements, and is available for new engines and latest versions of existing engines.

Applications

  • LNG carriers, offshore support vessels and tugs (mechanical drive or diesel/gas-electric main engine)
  • Auxiliary generating sets on LNG-fuelled vessels
