MAN Smart HYBRID Experience Marine Hybrid System

The MAN Smart HYBRID Experience is a modular marine hybrid propulsion system for yachts and workboats from MAN Engines as single system supplier. Diesel engines, electric motors, batteries and on-board gensets can be combined so that the degree of hybridisation fits the application, with all energy sources and consumers integrated into one intelligent management and diagnostics system.

System structure

• Diesel engine: D2862 (V12), D2868 (V8) or D2676 (in-line 6), up to 1,471 kW (2,000 HP); versions for yachts and for workboats, including in-line 6 with exhaust aftertreatment for workboats
• Clutch: separates the diesel engine from the e-motor and engages/disengages without power interruption
• E-motor/alternator unit: 200 kW or 400 kW rated output, up to 96% efficiency
• Gearbox: V-drive, IV-drive, parallel and down-angle configurations

Key features

• Seamless switching between operating modes: automatic speed synchronisation, continuous propeller torque, no jerks or pauses
• Detection of crash-stop manoeuvres in battery mode with automatic diesel support
• Standardised coolant and electrical connections and mounting points for easy integration
• System pre-tested on the test bench under varied loads, speeds and conditions before installation
• Three system designs: Comfort, Efficiency, Performance
• All engines approved for renewable diesel/HVO to EN15940 and ASTM D975, reducing CO2 by around 90%

Applications

Sports boats, explorer and luxury yachts, government fast boats, pilot boats and ferries. Reference: the classic passenger ferry "Iris" on Lake Como, in scheduled service since end-2024 carrying up to 2,000 passengers per day.
