About

Austal commenced operations in Henderson, Western Australia, in 1988 to build commercial vessels for the international market and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in December 1998. Its US shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, was established in 1999, making Austal the first international shipbuilder contracted to deliver vessels for United States defense forces; it is the centre of manufacturing for programs including the Littoral Combat Ship, Expeditionary Fast Transport and Virginia-class submarine modules.

In 2011 Austal acquired a commercial shipbuilding facility in Balamban, Cebu, Philippines, and in 2018 it began operating a shipyard in Vietnam. The Henderson shipyard and Hope Valley Road facility are the lead sites for Australian defence vessel production, while commercial vessels are built in Vietnam and the Philippines. The company has more than 4,000 employees worldwide, and the Austal Australia quality management system is certified to ISO 9001 by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).
