Flexible Shaft Couplings

R&D Marine flexible shaft couplings in polyester elastomer for marine engines of 5 to 1500 HP and 60-1400 lb-ft torque, with fail-safe drive, thrust acceptance and misalignment compensation.

Description

R&D Marine Flexible Shaft Couplings connect the marine gearbox output flange to the propeller shaft, isolating vibration and noise while accommodating misalignment from hull flexing or engine movement on flexible mounts.

Key features

  • Polyester elastomer flexible element resistant to saltwater, diesel and lubricating oils
  • Fail-safe design keeps the drive engaged if the flexible element fails
  • Accepts propeller thrust, so no separate thrust bearing is needed
  • Contoured flexible disc accommodates temporary misalignment between engine and shaft
  • Red cone-headed bolts allow simple periodic alignment checks
  • No machining required for installation

Configurations

  • Linear stiffness elements for general applications
  • High-deflection elements to combat gear noise and spline wear at low speeds
  • Hammerhead elements with three-stage stiffness for torsionally active applications
  • Wide range of engine/gearbox combinations, from standard to custom

Technical data

  • Engine power range: 5 to 1500 HP
  • Torque capacity: 60 to 1400 lb-ft

Selection

Coupling choice depends on engine horsepower, gearbox type and reduction ratio, and gearbox flange dimensions.
