Bloom Energy System / Package
Marine Fuel Cell Energy Solutions
Bloom Energy's modular, fuel-flexible fuel cell power platform for ships, able to run on LNG, biogas and 50% blended hydrogen, ruggedized for marine tilt, roll, pitch and vibration requirements.
Description
Bloom Energy's Marine Fuel Cell Energy Solutions platform adapts Bloom's land-based fuel cell microgrid technology for shipboard power generation. Using LNG as the primary fuel, it offers immediate emissions reductions and higher efficiency than conventional power sources, with a modular, upgradeable design intended to avoid stranded assets as hydrogen and other zero-emission fuels become available.
Key features
- Fuel-flexible: operates on LNG, biogas and blended hydrogen (50%)
- Modular and upgradeable; described as IMO 2040- and 2050-ready
- Future pathways to zero carbon via carbon capture or green hydrogen
- Can also be configured as an electrolyzer to convert water into hydrogen
Marine adaptation
The technology has been ruggedized to meet marine classification requirements for tilt, roll, pitch, vibration and safety. Testing includes vibration testing at defined frequencies and durations and tilt-platform testing of pitch, yaw and roll motions, followed by on-water demonstration.
Applications
- Onboard power generation for merchant ships and other vessels seeking to cut emissions in line with IMO carbon-intensity targets
