About
The school describes itself as the first national maritime training plan designed by union and industry. It grew out of "Operation LEAP" (Licensed Engineers Apprentice Program), set up in the mid-1960s to address a shortage of marine engineers, and was renamed the Calhoon MEBA Engineering School in 1966. The first class graduated in October 1968.
It is funded by labor and management and governed by a Board of Trustees of six shipping company representatives and six union representatives. The Easton campus includes a 117-room hotel, dining room and lounge, a conference center, a container refrigeration lab with seven operating units, and a live 12.47 kV power system used for high-voltage training.
