Candela C-Pod Electric Drive
Direct-drive electric pod motor for hydrofoil craft with twin permanent magnet motors driving counter-rotating propellers, seawater-cooled and oil-free. C-Pod MAX for the P-12 (2 units, 320 kW at takeoff); standard C-Pod for the C-8 (about 80 kW).
Description
The Candela C-Pod is a direct-drive electric pod motor series designed for high-speed hydrofoil craft. Permanent magnet motors placed in a submerged pod drive counter-rotating propellers directly, eliminating gears and mechanical transmission to improve efficiency, reduce noise and minimise maintenance.
Key features
- Permanent magnet motors in an underwater pod; no gearbox or transmission
- Counter-rotating propellers, each driven by its own motor, recovering rotational energy from the wake
- Seawater-cooled, sealed motors with no oil or fluid changes
- Power density four times that of other marine powertrains, according to Candela
- Very low airborne and underwater noise
- Zero operating emissions and no lubricating oil

- C-Pod MAX: for the Candela P-12; two units give a combined 320 kW for takeoff
- Standard C-Pod: for the Candela C-8; approximately 80 kW
