About
Catholic port ministry was conceived and developed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1920, and two years later Pope Pius XI blessed the Apostleship of the Sea and encouraged it to extend its mission worldwide. In most major ports the diocese assigns a chaplain to serve mariners aboard ship and ashore.
AOS-USA was established by the Bishop Promoter in 1976 to bring port chaplains, mariners and supporters together for continuing education and spiritual growth. It created the Cruise Ship Priest Program in 2003 and also promotes the Cause for Servant of God Brother Marinus (Capt. Leonard LaRue). AOS-USA is a not-for-profit entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code.
