AMSC System / Package Enhanced
Ship Protection Systems (SPS)
Superconductor-based degaussing systems that mask a naval ship's magnetic signature against magnetic sensors and mines, at much lower weight than copper-based systems.
Description
AMSC's Ship Protection Systems are degaussing systems that cloak a naval ship's magnetic signature, making the ship much harder to detect for magnetic sensors and magnetically activated mines. Conventional degaussing systems need tens of tons of copper wire and consume large amounts of shipboard power and space; AMSC's proprietary high-temperature superconductor (HTS) systems provide identical signature masking while dramatically reducing system weight.
Key features
- HTS degaussing for magnetic signature masking
- Much lower system weight than copper-based degaussing
- Preserves limited ship power and space for other missions
- Same HTS technology used in large naval applications such as propulsion motors and power generators
Applications
Contracts include US Navy San Antonio-class amphibious ships (USS Fort Lauderdale, USS Harrisburg, USS Pittsburg, USS Richard M. McCool) and, in 2024, the Royal Canadian Navy ($75 million). AMSC has also delivered deployable mine countermeasure systems to the US Navy.
